Pie in the Face: The Messy History of Splosh and Food Fetish

What is sploshing, why do people love getting messy, and why did clowns get there first? A cheeky guide to splosh, WAM and pie fetish, from custard to cream.

Pie in the Face: The Messy History of Splosh and Food Fetish

Picture it. A clown walks towards you with a custard pie. There’s a gleam in her eye. You know what’s coming. You could run. You don’t run.

Splat.

If some part of you went “ooh” at that, congratulations. You might be a splosher. Grab a towel, you’re going to need it.

What Is Sploshing?

Sploshing, or splosh fetish, is sexual arousal from being covered in (or covering someone else in) wet, messy substances. Most often, that means food: custard, cream, cake, baked beans, chocolate sauce, jelly, spaghetti, and yes, pies.

It’s part of a wider family known as WAM, short for wet and messy. WAM covers everything from sploshing with food to mud, slime, paint, oil and getting fully clothed people soaking wet.

What unites them all is the joy of mess. Something clean becomes filthy. Something neat gets ruined. And somebody usually ends up laughing.

Where Does the Word Splosh Come From?

The term comes from Splosh!, a British fetish magazine launched in the late 1980s dedicated entirely to messy fun. It featured people being cheerfully covered in food, and it gave a name to something a lot of people had been quietly into for years.

The UK is still considered the spiritual home of splosh. Of course it is. They invented custard powder and slapstick comedy. It was always going to end up here.

Clowns Got There First

Here’s the thing. Before splosh was a fetish, it was a gag. And the clowns were the ones doing it.

The pie in the face is one of the oldest bits in physical comedy. Silent film stars made it famous in the 1910s, and by 1927 Laurel and Hardy were staging an all-out pie war in The Battle of the Century, reportedly hurling thousands of pies in a single scene. Circus clowns had already been slapping each other with buckets of whitewash, foam and custard for decades.

Why does it work so well? Because a pie in the face is a perfect little story: dignity, then chaos. Somebody thinks they’re in control, and then they’re dripping in cream. It’s humiliation, surprise and mess all at once.

Sound familiar? That’s basically the recipe for splosh.

Why Is Splosh Fetish So Hot?

The mess is the point

There’s something primal about getting messy. Most of us were told off for it when we were younger, and adult life is a long, tidy exercise in not getting sauce on our shirts. Splosh throws that out the window. It’s permission to be gloriously, disgustingly dirty.

Texture, texture, texture

Warm custard. Cold cream. Sticky syrup. Squishy cake. Splosh is an extremely sensory kink. The feeling of something thick sliding down skin, or clothes getting heavy and soaked, is a huge part of the appeal.

Ruining something perfect

A lot of sploshers love the before and after. A carefully dressed person, a perfect outfit, immaculate makeup… all destroyed by one bucket of beans. The transformation from pristine to ruined is deeply satisfying.

Humiliation and power

Getting pied is a little humiliating, and that’s a big draw for some people. Being the one holding the pie is powerful. Being the one wearing it is a sweet kind of surrender.

It’s fun

Genuinely, sploshing is one of the most joyful kinks out there. It’s impossible to take yourself too seriously when you’ve got trifle in your ear. People laugh. People shriek. People lick things they probably shouldn’t.

Clowns and Splosh: A Match Made in Custard

When you combine a clown with splosh, you’re not inventing something new. You’re just bringing a classic act home.

Clowns bring:

•          The props. Pies, buckets, squirting flowers, seltzer bottles. The clown armoury is basically a splosh starter kit.

•          The attitude. Clowns have no dignity to lose, so they dive into mess with gusto.

•          The makeup. White face paint plus whipped cream plus chocolate sauce is a visual feast. Literally.

•          The slapstick. Slipping, sliding, splatting. Clowns make mess theatrical.

A messy clown scene is chaos in the best way. Face paint running, wig soaked, costume dripping, and a clown who’s absolutely thrilled about all of it. Check out our messy clown videos if you want to see just how sticky it gets.

Popular Splosh Scenarios

•          The pie ambush: a surprise pie to the face, then another, then another

•          The food fight: two (or more) people going to war with everything in the kitchen

•          The gunge tank: sitting pretty until someone pulls the lever

•          The cake sit: exactly what it sounds like, and very popular with the booty crowd

•          Dressed-up and messed-up: full outfit, full ruin

•          Pie play for two: feeding, smearing and licking it off, for the more intimate sploshers

How to Try Sploshing Safely

Want to bring splosh home? A few rules from the professionals:

•          Keep food out of internal bits. Sugary and oily foods can cause infections, particularly for anyone with a vulva. Keep the custard on the outside.

•          Watch out for allergies. Check ingredients before anything goes near anyone’s mouth or skin.

•          Protect your space. Tarps, old sheets, a paddling pool or the shower. Carpet is not your friend.

•          Mind the slip factor. Custard on tiles is a genuine safety hazard. Clowns make it look easy. It isn’t.

•          Eyes are off limits. Aim for cheeks, not corneas.

•          Plan the clean-up. A warm shower together makes excellent aftercare.
